Unidentified subject!

Hi! I like Microsoft's new tahoma font. With the help of Andreas' stfont.exe tool, it was no problem to add a 8pt Tahoma font to Squeak. The generated bold face, however, looks ugly. Unfortunately, Squeak tries to create different faces of a font automatically. Instead of a automatically generated face, I'd like to use the real tahoma-bold font, which is also available. I'm now looking for a good way to add multi-face fonts to Squeak. Has anybody already worked on this? I thought about creating a StrikeFont subclass which would not reset the derivativeFonts cache but use it instead generating new faces. However, it seems that subclasses of StrikeFont aren't well supported by Squeak. As the main problem with the generated bold variant is that the space between two characters is too small, it might be enough to just add an extra row of blank pixels behind each printed character. I think, the Amiga, which uses a similar way of printing fonts, worked this way. bye -- Stefan Matthias Aust // Are you ready to discover the twilight zone?

Morphic redraw question

Hi all, I'm writing an application with a Morphic GUI. The display contains a widget that's subclassed from RectangleMorph and uses a Form to store the actual picture. When the app. wishes to display something new, the changes are all drawn on the Form and then #changed: is called on the morph to force a redraw. The #drawOn: method simply copies the form to the display. The problem with this arrangement is that it's a bit too slow. An easy optimization is available however. Since usually, only a small subset of the display needs to be redrawn, I can override #invalidRect: to keep an OrderedCollection of changed rectangles around and get #drawOn: to only draw over those. (I didn't discover DamageRecorder until later.) The problem with this scheme is that the multiple sends of #invalidRect: aren't enough to cause the widget to be redrawn. It seems that only #changed: will do that, even though all #changed: does (by default) is send #invalidRect: with the morph's bounds as its argument, which makes the optimization moot. So, my questions are: 1) Is there any way to cause a morph to be redrawn without invalidating the whole thing? 2) What normally triggers the redrawing of a morph? headless VM questions

Being quite new to Squeak, and this being my first post to this list, let me first say that Squeak is the coolest thing I've ever seen. My sincere thanks to all who have made it possible. The second coolest thing would have to be PWS and Swiki! Now for my questions. I've been running a Swiki on a Linux box at work. I would like to run it headless so that Squeak does not try to open a GUI. How do I do this? I recompiled the VM with -DHEADLESS and got an appropriately named executable, but when I start it up I still get a GUI. Is there a corresponding image change which I need, or a command line argument? Thanks. Doug McPherson

Browser is baaaaaaad

Hi. 1. Open up a browser. Go to the System-Support class category. Stand over SystemDictionary. Start editing #openSourceFiles. Save something like more comments. Edit a bit more. Don't save. 2. Open up another browser. Go to the same class category. Add a class named AuthorInitialsManager. 3. Go to the first browser. Try to abort your newly edited method by cancelling the changes. Bang! You can't because the browser will try to find the compiled method for #openSourceFiles in the wrong class. And you can't save either, so the browser is somewhat useless. Ok, the problem in this case was that when I tried to save, the compiler didn't find the variable names in the wrong class. So I added the variable names, saved, killed the browser, deleted the variables and the method. I don't know how to fix this. Andres.

View Programming?

Greetings folks! I've recently discovered Squeak, and am now in the throes of really learning Smalltalk (and loving every minute of it). For learning, I've been using Smalltalk80: The Language, and a couple of other books, however, none of them really deals with basic View programming. I realize that there are a lot niftier ways of doing things now (morphic in Squeak, the UI builder in VisualWorks, etc.), but I would like to be able to work with the basics. This also comes from the fact the I'm using Blair McGlashan's WinCE port for a lot of my work, which is pretty stripped down. Many thanks to Blair for this port!!! I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a resource or two for learing this aspect of Smalltalk programming? I've played a bit with the "One window, One button" example on the gatech Wiki server, which merely told me how much I didn't know about basic window view programming. Also, and this is perhaps, again, rather rudimentary. Please forgive me, but how to save an image so that it fires off a specific method when it starts up? In my case, I'd like to install PWS as an NT service, so I'd like the initialization and startup of the server to happen when Squeak is launched. Thanks in advance if anyone can provide any gentle pointers. I'm obviously still on the wrong side of the learning curve, but endeavoring to get over it! I still don't like it that much, although I like it better. Here's a summary of what this change set will do. It will overwrite the method that invoked the amnesia on AuthorInitials in SystemDictionary. Utilities will also include a pair of methods and a pair of reimplementations. And then, a new AuthorInitialsManager class will be filed in that same category. All other functions about author initials in Utilities will be sent to AuthorInitialsManager. I've tested it some and it seems to work. In its current state, the AIManager has several moods and two startup modes. The first is the soft startup mode. A soft startup is a normal startup, no image moving or anything. The manager has three moods: 1. Ignore: won't bother about user initials (default). 2. Disturb: will pretend a hard startup has just happened. 3. AskAlways: will always ask for user initials. Hard startups occur when the image has been moved. The manager has three moods: 1. DanIngalls: will forget the author's initials (and let the system complain later). 2. Warn: will warn the user about the fact that he/she should check the author's initials. 3. AskAlways: will ask for new author initials. Have fun. Andres.
