General comment on Cheese and prior work in this area

With regard to visual frameworks for dynamic language environments that attempt to be portable across multiple operating systems and also take advantage of the graphic primitives on each platform, I recall the extensive work that was done about 5-10 years ago for Common Lisp. (Someone help me out with the name of the framework, I'm drawing a blank and my manual for it is buried in a box somewhere :-) My recollection is that the approach was quite abstract (i.e., inefficient) and died from its own weight (or the general declining interest in Lisp). It would probably be useful to review the effort from the point of view of "lessons learned". Anyone out there in SqueakLand work on it? Mike Wirth

Portable Cheese Protocol vs. Implementation

Squeakers, I'm on a crossroad about bringing portability to Cheese: Possibility 1) maintain parallel hierarchies like in Cheese4 where ViewManager uses PmWindow. In Cheese5, ViewManager becomes Window, the protocol for Window is portable but the implementation is not. Platform-dependent implementation can be managed in a variety of ways, the first which comes to my mind is "subsystems" (similar to "Applications" in VA). Possibility 2) maintain parallel hierarchies again but now use the "Abstract Factory" DP. Thus Window _implementation_ becomes portable, too, but I can't immediately see whether this buys us anything. Just thoughts... Regards, Boris

A Database for Squeak: Question on DataStream

I have built a small database in Squeak -- a FileDictionary, available at http://guzdial.cc.gatech.edu/st/dbdict.17Mar445pm.cs (See examples in FileDictionary(class)>>basicExamples) What I've done is to subclass DataStream to create a PositionableDataStream that allows me to set the position of the underlying bytestream. I know that in ReferenceStream this is super dangerous, because objects are written only once and the position flies all over the place during a read. But for DataStream, I think that I can safely set the position for reading given objects (or to the end of the file) if I only set the position to known start positions of objects, because DataStream doesn't deal with multiple refs, or cycles, or recursive links. Is this true? Am I making a safe assumption? Thanks! I believe that Mike's thinking of the "Garnet" package for CommonLisp, which was large and complicated and not all that platform independent anyway. (I once tried to port a "portable" Garnet package from SGI to the Mac, oh boy...) The Squeak page at PlugCom now also contains 0.2.2 as source and dvi. Not really big difference, just two small bug fixes: Carl Gundel corrected Window>> openWindow to be Window>>open (so self openWindow is now super open), and fixed the 'minButton' typo. Future schedule: next release will be a major update of both Cheese (4.95?) and CheeseDoc (0.95?) Boris

I made a posting last week, about troubles finding the image and changes file, right after doing a 'save as' on a Unix platform. There is actually a small fix for this, which applies to all platforms. Morphic bug under Linux

Hi all, I've noticed that when I select the "New Drawing" item from the main popup menu in the Morphic world "Play With Me 3", Squeak hangs. This also happens to me in Squeak 1.21 and 1.30. Once, after moving the Squeak window, I got it to unhang long enough to display the image editor before hanging again. Running inside gdb shows it to be inside the interpreter when it hangs (and apparently executing bytecodes normally). If I leave it a while, it crashes with the standard stack dump. I've appended a copy of the last few lines of the trace to this message. As you can see, it appears to be an infinite recursion in basicNew. I'm running Linux 2.0.30, fvwm95 1.24, X with S3 acceleration, libc version 5.3.12 and libX11 version 6.1. Other information is available on request. Has anyone else seen this bug? Squeakers, CheeseDoc 0.2 is available. Take a look at http://www.plugcom.ru/~usib6tfj/squeak.html There are DVI and texi source. I have some strange problem with my installation of dvips so I was unable to make PS and PDF versions. I would appreciate if someone made a PDF version (if this stuff is of any interest at all ;-)) So now remains the easy part - to actually implement Cheese 5 :-) Boris

MIDI Socket #?

Hello all, The MIDI part of Siren is progressing nicely. The C-level scheduler and virtual channel map work, and I have a rudimentary patch editor that's a gas to use with QT musical instruments. I'm also hoping that the new primitive interface will be more portable than the first cut--most of the code (scheduler included) is quite portable (I believe), and there's a machine-dependent driver that has a simple API (thanks to Tobias Kunze of Stanford). My question today is about sending MIDI over sockets. I plan to open a socket as one of the "standard" MIDI ports on start-up, and I assume that someone has already built applications that pass MIDI over sockets. Do any of you know of such work, what socket number was used, and if there were any special aspects to the MIDI packets that were transmitted?
