So, the preface to the Blue Book (google: "Blue Book Smalltalk") gives the date as "January 1983". On what month/day was the book actually released?
At any rate, many happy non-local returns. :)

That's the same printing as the copy I bought in 1983.
I also have a copy that my wife found in a used book store in 1997 for $3.00 (she bought it immediately -- she knows me very well) -- that one says "Reprinted with corrections, July 1985".

I bought mine via bookfinder.com from a small store in Philadelphia two years ago. The internet rules! It's the May 1983 print, and still in excellent condition. The price was below $10, plus shipping to Germany (also below $10) :-)
The store obviously didn't know what gem they had. Maybe they figured that no one will want to buy a computer book from the 80ies. Currently there are three copies listed at Bookfinder with each one well above $120!
For everyone who wants to get the right book: It's titled "Smalltalk-80: The Language and its Implementation", a later edition misses the "Implementation" part (http://users.ipa.net/~dwighth/smalltalk/bluebook/ bluebook_imp_toc.html).

I also have the blue 85 version on my shelf here, bought used at Powell's in 92 (along with the orange book).
I might be misremembering, but I think I was looking at a *draft* of the blue book in late 82/early 83 while playing with the Magnolia at Tektronix. I know I was walking through some well-written text to learn about this wonderous new toy in front of me. And I'm sure I had a copy of the blue book while at ServioLogic in late 83/early 84. I was a motivating force to get ServioLogic (later GemStone) to switch from a "smalltalk-like" language to "real" Smalltalk.

Quite recently, I bought a copy of the Blue Book online, from one of the Amazon.com online shops. When it arrived, I found a rubber stamp on the flyleaf that reads "Servio Logic Information Center". It is also notated: "Rec'd 9-7-83/$38.95/a-w". Some things come full circle.

Whoa. I've probably touched that book. That *is* full circle.

I received my copy directly from Adele and Dave at PARC. The dedication is dated (by them) as 4/20/83. I believe these copies were some of the very first shipped by Addison-Wesley.
For the record, my copy of the Orange Book was signed by Adele on 1/19/84. My copy of the Green Book, signed by Glenn Krasner, is unfortunately lacking the date he signed it.
I still have one of the few tickets for a hot air balloon ride at PARC for the official release of the Smalltalk-80 system.
Nice memory Craig, thanks for the reminder... paul
