Hello,
I've been looking at the relicensing agreement issue, and trying to make better mapping from the initial to the person. It is almost straightforward if it is not in the preparation of 3.9 time; I have all changes in the update stream so I can grep and look at the preamble and find it out. (I built a little browser so that you can visit all old versions, more or less similar to Maurice has, I believe).
However, in the 3.9 era the changeset typically looks like:
|repository| repository := MCHttpRepository location: 'http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a' user: '' password: ''. (repository loadVersionFromFileNamed: 'ScriptLoader-sd.183.mcz') load.
and cannot get the great detail. For example, if I would like to find out who 'tp' is in the following method:
!DependentsArray methodsFor: 'copying' stamp: 'tp 7/6/2006 11:11'! size ^self inject: 0 into: [ :count :dep | dep ifNil: [ count ] ifNotNil: [ count + 1 ]]! !
What is the best way?

I'm not sure what sort of detail you are looking for. If you mean the sort of textual information you might find in a changeset preamble you might be able to find that information in the MC repository, hopefully including a reference to a Mantis report with further information. Go to http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a.html and click on Versions and search for the specific version you want to examine, then look at the details, you can even browse the code as of that version if you want.
Alternatively if you want a 3.9 or later image with full history it seems like it should work to start with a 3.8 image and force it to load updates. This will be a long and arduous task but in time should result in an image with method versions reflecting the changes during 3.9 (and 3.10 if you continue that far).

I'd probably build the extention of tool that I have now; instead of filing in, it just creates the ChangeRecord like object and store in my dictionary. I don't necessarily like to see the current code changing^^; In this way, I can view the long history of methods from 1.13 to the latest in a browser-like tool.

Uhm, I may be confused again, or maybe I confused you. I did not mean to imply that Scott is the only contributor to SkipList, Leandro Caniglia is certainly another major contributor and Stephane and Tom Koenig have also contributed. Both of them have signed the agreement though and so there are no concerns regarding the licensing, at least.

I meant that "a changeset" that has the preamble where I "might be able to find that information in the MC repository". how do I find in the MC repository which version contains the changeset with a method with, say, 'ASF'?

Sure. I understand that you didn't imply that Scott is the only contributor. I had a wrong sense that we hevested Scott's change by 3.8.

MC is snapshot-based, every MCZ contains all the code. So you would have to bisect all MCZs to find the one introducing a change.
An MCZ is a zip file that also contains the plain Smalltalk source code, so that could be used.
A more efficient way is to use MCDs which store something like a changeset (actually, the old and new snapshots of the changed parts) that updates from one MCZ to another.
An up-to-date SqueakSource server can auto-generate those MCDs even though they do not appear in the file index list. E.g., this repository
http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a/
shows
http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a/Collections-md.71.mcz http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a/Collections-md.70.mcz http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a/Collections-md.69.mcz
but you can access
http://source.squeakfoundation.org/39a/Collections-md.70(md.69).mcd
which is much smaller (though the first request might take long because the mcd is built). It has the new methods in new/source.st so that's where you would find the changes ...
The full history info including preambles is stored in both MCZs and MCDs inside a file named "version" as literal Smalltalk array (very similar to s-expr).

Well, I started to write up my ideas on how to go about this. But I run into a roadblock for any post-3.8 and I'm struggling to find a workable solution. I'll keep thinking about it and get back to you if I come up with anything.
One solution (tedious) might be to start with the date in the timestamp and check first the squeak-dev archive for that date, then bugs.squeak.org. This is going to take a lot of manual checking though.

Not limited to the 3.9 era, here are the list I still have question marks in the Etoys image.
'ag' '?' 'cE' '?' 'chronograph' '?' 'de' '?' 'drm' '?' 'jj' '?' 'jp' '?' 'm' '?' 'md' '?' 'pad' '?' 'to' '?'
and there are others:
'abc' '?' 'edt' '?' 'EP' '?' 'EW' '?' 'MM' 'marca?' 'mm' '?' 'NDCC' '?' 'squeak' '?' 'tm' '?' 'tp' '?' 'YE' '?'
Come to think of it, 'jp' should be Jens Uwe Pipka.
Among others, I really would like to get the agreements from Richard Harmon, Sames and 'jp'. Antony told me that Sames has an email address at Cincom. Does anybody commutes to the same office with him or such?
I searched Richard Harmon on Skype and got several hits. I might solicit and ask one by one if one of them is the ANSI compatibility and ScaledDecimal Richard Harmon.

'ag' '?' 'cE' '?' 'chronograph' '?' 'de' '?' 'drm' '?' 'jj' '?' 'jp' '?' 'm' '?' 'md' '?' 'pad' '?' 'to' '?'
and there are others:
'abc' '?' 'edt' '?' 'EP' '?' 'EW' '?' 'MM' 'marca?' 'mm' '?' 'NDCC' '?' 'squeak' '?' 'tm' '?' 'tp' '?' 'YE' '?'
I'll see what I can do with these. Not a lot of time left for me today though.
Come to think of it, 'jp' should be Jens Uwe Pipka.
Among others, I really would like to get the agreements from Richard Harmon, Sames and 'jp'. Antony told me that Sames has an email address at Cincom. Does anybody commutes to the same office with him or such?
I've asked Michael Lucas-Smith to point out we are looking for him and he said he would do so.
Ken
I searched Richard Harmon on Skype and got several hits. I might solicit and ask one by one if one of them is the ANSI compatibility and ScaledDecimal Richard Harmon.

According to Michael:
<michaell> jp is Joseph Pelrine <kencausey> michaell: Oh? Is that from Samuel? <michaell> no that's from me, i know both of them well <kencausey> michaell: And it makes sense Joseph would have worked on SUnit code that would have been incorporated into Squeak? <michaell> yep. Joseph was the maintainer of SUnit for a long while, in fact, in theory, is still the current maintainer. <michaell> Sam worked on SUnit before Joseph and handed it to Joseph many moons ago. <michaell> before that, Kent Beck made it. <michaell> All of the code is public domain <kencausey> michaell: I see, great, thanks for the info <michaell> Joseph made SUnit cross-smalltalk, which is how it got "everywhere" <kencausey> michaell: Do you think his metaprog.com email address is still valid? <michaell> yep
That is jpelrine@metaprog.com

Ah, that was interesting. I was told that there was previous conversation with Joseph and he actually replied to say "he has never contributed to Squeak". That is true in a sense that he didn't publish it for Squeak, but it is in the image.
Joseph, if you don't mind, could you also agree to make it public under the MIT license, and just a gesture could you sign:
http://netjam.org/squeak/SqueakDistributionAgreement.pdf
and send it via a physical letter or FAX or scanned PDF to Viewpoints or me? It somehow doesn't matter whether the intended license was SqL or not... At least the signed document would make it clear.
Thank you very much!
By the way if anyone wants to get in on the missing initials via method submission hunt the code I'm using to map author initials to methods can be found at
http://paste.lisp.org/display/65675
this is shamelessly adapted from a SystemNavigation method.

The full list of non-signers in the Etoys image is below. It looks a lot, but some just contributed a few tests that we can remove, some just dead code we can remove, some just contributed games enhancements we can remove, and some are one-liners that no way can be significant. Now only a few dozens of methods that are involved, and we might just rewrite.
But if any of you have contact with any of the following, or don't mind sending emails, please please give it a try.

Yoshiki,
Jason Johnson (jason.johnson.081 at gmail.com) was able to contact Jerry Archibald's heirs, who were willing to sign the new license. I think that Craig has a copy of the correspondence, but I don't know if the actual license document was signed. I will send you a copy of the emails off-list.

Note the date. Jecel was kind enough to check in a Squeak 1.3 image and these initials were on several methods both in the sound and form areas. This goes back a long way, but all the submissions are from that date. First thought was maybe that this was someone at Disney, but given submissions only on one date maybe this was a one time contributor? Or someone who used those initials only once, which might bring us back to Giovanni Giorgi, but was he involved that far back?
Jecel has email going back that far and is in the process of looking through it, he or I will follow up if anything is found.
'abc' '?'
There is some thought that this one is going to be a problem because it was used in some cases where for some reason the initials were entered like this because it wasn't thought to be relevant but then the same image was used later to produce a fix without updating the initials. However against that theory is the fact that all of the methods with these initials are in the Monticello packages, but they span a period of about 4 1/2 years. This may turn out to be Keith Hodges, we are trying to figure it out. But there is also a possiblity that Alexandre Bergel used these at least a time or two.

And, the one method #isActive is not used (anymore) in fact. We can remove it if we like.

Using this I was able to narrow it down to somewhere between Morphic-stephaneducasse.51 and Morphic-CdG.55. Unfortunately none of the intermediate versions are available for checking. I strongly suspect that this is part of the

For 'EP, 'NDCC', and 'YE'. Matthew Fulmer was able to narrow it down between CollectionTests-md.18 and CollectionTests-sd.22 and the description for -sd.22 is
Name: CollectionsTests-sd.22 Author: sd Time: 25 March 2006, 2:50:35 pm UUID: 56f15fed-76ac-45f4-b6e9-a5f437adff56 Ancestors: CollectionsTests-sd.21

So it is logical that all of these probably enter the image here. Stephane?

Hello,
I'm still tracking the initials, and now looking at the main stream image post 3.8 era. For the 3.8 and Squeakland-Etoys stream, I basically got all initials accounted, but in the line up to 3.10.2, I still have following initials that I don't have the real name associated with:
('dik' 'mvl' 'pf' 'nm' 'kph' 'JPF' 'hk' 'wbk' 'tonyg' 'mtf' 'ktt''ndCollectionsTests-Unordered' 'kb' 'rej' 'ge')
Ken, can I challenge you to find out who they are? ^^;

That sounds right, but is there a preamble or a comment or something that we can look at to be sure?
The easiest is to go to www.squeaksource.com and look in the member section. Ok, this could be coincidence, but..
dik = Denis Kudriashov mvl = Martin v. Löwis pf = Petr Fischer nm = Nicolas Melin hk = Harald Kopp wbk = Bryce Kampjes tonyg = Tony Garnock-Jones mtf = Matthew Fulmer kb = Ken Bryant rej = Ralph Johnson
JPF, ktt (only as uppercase), ndCollectionsTests-Unordered and ge I didn't find on squeaksource.
hope this helps,

Ok. It is good. I'll later look at it a bit more close to find the matching but don't think there will be a big surprise.

As for ndCollectionsTests-Unordered, I would imagine that somebody just pasted the content of copy buffer accidentally...

And, the current methods in 3.10.2 that have the authors who hasn't turned in the agreement is about as follows:
In the Etoys image, we took a measure to remove or revert methods so now it is almost ready to ship as "fully-relicensed". If we would like to make 3.11 like that, we can do something similar to what the Etoys people are doing:
- Get rid of these tests from unsigned (i.e., inactive) members. - Revert MCP/KCP style contribution that makes no semantic differences. - Revert some more that makes very little semantic differences. - Rewrite some methods. - Forget about ScaledDecimal.
For the post 3.8 contributions, some names are not really matched against the changesets preambles, etc, and may not be associated with initials correctly. Somebody should do another pass to correct them.

Hello,
I'm still tracking the initials, and now looking at the main stream image post 3.8 era.
Ken, can I challenge you to find out who they are? ^^;

mtf is me. I'm not sure how you don't know. I'm registered at both SqueakMap and Squeaksource. SqueakMap is the official registry, no?

I'm sorry, my response was rather rude. I realize some things tend to fall through the cracks.

No problem, because I have a perfect excuse.^^;
Before this, I was only looking at the initials that exist in the Etoys line. Sorry for not doing a simple lookup at the regular places.

OK, so after looking through
http://map.squeak.org/accountsbyinitials
http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1011
http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/8
Where does that leave us? I'm a little bit busy right now, but I'll see what I can do if there are any left unidentified.

I am not expecting to have to sign anything given that my contributions were not until long after the decision to leave Squeak L behind was made public and go with Apache2 MIT etc was made public.

I personally am ok with it.

Cheers,

Hi, Herbert,
hk is me (Herbert König) as long as it's in Point, signed long ago.
Yes, we have the agreement from you. And in my record, it was associated with 'HK' (which doesn't have any methods), not 'hk'.
'hk' has two methods:
methods by Herbert Konig 'Point' >> theta (hk 11/10/2005 10:07) 'PointTest' >> testTheta (hk 11/10/2005 10:09)
(sorry not having umlaut there.)
Thank you!
