Rob is currently helping us with our cryptography group, and as far as I know is still working on Squeak-E.

A quote from Rob: "I work on SqueakElib, my squeak priority, only on an occasional schedule when the moon is in the proper phase and astrological signs point toward squeaky activities...once every 6 months or so."

I really don't think it necessary to assume details of someone's life by the books they no longer use, or the fact that they don't return an email.

Rob's a great guy, and I'm sure he will provide an update himself about Squeak-E.

It appears that Rob Withers, the primary motivator of Squeak-E progress, has undergone some kind of lifestyle change. I sent him an email asking him how he's doing and what he plans to do or not do, but haven't received a response. It appears that Squeak-E has been orphaned, and that whoever is interested should just start making new changes and using Monticello to manage it (much of the code is on SqueakSource).

I notice that he HAS made some changes recently (see the RSS page). I really just don't know what's going on. A mutual friend of ours has told me he will ask him, and I will follow up if anything is discovered.

Brian, I just got out of the hospital after a 6 day stay and I was out of email range previously. I am mostly done with squeakElib, mainly because I can't complete on my own. Both crypto and serialization are changing underneath me. I had no idea that you wished to discuss further, and I am of course up for that. Let's meet about it once I heal up my broken bones ( 6 weeks..).

I am done with all those books and I had heard that someone had spotted them and grabbed them. way to go!

He didn't reply on the Squeak-E list, either, and there are a lot of people, myself included, who want to move the project faster and would get more work done knowing that he doesn't intend to work on it as anything more than an infrequent hobby.

The last message on Squeak-E from before the question I replied to is over a year ago, and about E, not Squeak-E. The last Squeak-E message from him in my archives is from 2003; there are a few messages on the main squeak list from him from 2004 and 2005 but they are unrelated. I think I can safely say that the project should involve anyone who is interested now, rather than everyone (including Rob) assuming that Rob owns it when he clearly (but not publicly stated that) does not consider it a priority at all.

I do apologize for assuming so much, but it was quite alarming to see almost two dozen books materialize on a random bookstore's shelves that belong to someone you thought would like to chat over said subjects.
