Hello folks-
Anyone here done any benchmarking on a new Athlon 64? I'm going to be in the market for an upgrade for my ancient K6-2 350 MHz, and the machine will be as exclusively Squeak as I can pull off.
The idea is to find a machine that runs Squeak the fastest for the least amount of cash. :)
Regards, Aaron

Gerry Bell sent me those numbers from the 'other' 64 bit platform:
"This machine was a single processor 1.8Ghz G5.
Stock VM:
'129,620,253 bytecodes/sec; 5,241,007 sends/sec' '125736738 bytecodes/sec; 5237113 sends/sec' '130346232 bytecodes/sec; 5206170 sends/sec' '130147432 bytecodes/sec; 5187016 sends/sec' '130147432 bytecodes/sec; 5031516 sends/sec'"
John's 500Mhz G3 powerbooks gives numbers like so
'5,1405,622 bytecodes/sec; 1,860,771 sends/sec' '51282051 bytecodes/sec; 1873720 sends/sec' '50673000 bytecodes/sec; 1863347 sends/sec' '51488334 bytecodes/sec; 1839164 sends/sec' '50996015 bytecodes/sec; 1876332 sends/sec'
Although the G5 numbers bytescodes/sec / Mhz doesn't scale right, so I'm wondering about the G5 number. For the G3 it's 0.1028112 bytecodes per Hz, but G5 says 0.07201125 bytecodes per Hz. I'd expect the G5 to do oh 185,000,000 bytecodes/sec
I'll point out Gerry also submitted some macrobenchmark numbers Total time = 246297 milliseconds. (stock VM) Total time = 201351 milliseconds. (G5 specific compiled VM)
The 45 second difference has me confused. I've heard if the energy saver settting isn't cranked right off in the G5 then it will trade CPU/Heat performance for quiet (less fan noise).Sooo can't say what else the G5 was doing or how fast it really was running.
PS Thanks to Gerry for collecting some numbers.

I was trying to do some colaborative development with a relative squeak newbie when I tried, for the first time, to set up a remote session between the two squeaks. He recived the IM I sent him just fine but when he replied my immage hung. =(
Since this happened on my machine (and is extremely repeatable) and because I have been suffering numerous linux related problems on my machine I assumed something in my system libraries was at fault... Miraculously I was able to clear up some of the problems on my system but Squeak was still having problems....
I ran gdb on squeak and reproduced the problem by opening a second immage and sending a message to the first. I found that the VM was still running but was nonresponsive due to CPU-hog processes.
I turned on CPU watcher and cought *TWO* over-time threads simultaneously.
My guess is that I'm witnessing a complex interaction between the immage and the latest CVS source.
This problem is reproducable (on my machine at least) with both my workhorse 3.6-final immage and my "experamental" 3.7-alpha image. I wouldn't be supprised if my workhorse is a bit quirky at this point but the 3.7-alpha is mostly clean... very minimal usage asside from the update streams and VM generation...
I'll be willing to provide the 3.7 immage to anyone who needs to see the actual error messages...

Hi Alan, I'm not an expert, just a thing to test, is it possible that you are using Nebraska ? if so, if I remember correctly, their was a problem with Nebraska and the SqueakLogo in flash . Try deleting SqueakLogo....
