However, wouldn't it be more appropriate to register the plugin type with (Netscape's) plugin registry, so that we can use the browser's normal routine for downloading & installing the plugin as required. The appropriate, required functionality ought to be there already.
There's no need to register with Netscape. You just have to include the PLUGINSPAGE parameter in every Squeaklet EMBED tag. Then Netscape will tell you that you dont have the right plugin and take you to the right download page (could someone check with IE?). I could setup a CGI script that checks the system type and presents the right files to download. http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/communicator/plugin/devov.htm#100...
I'd prefer if we could this Netscape's "SmartUpdate" feature because it works the same on all platforms. It basically loads down a zip file (jar format) and runs your own JavaScript installer routine. See http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/communicator/jarman/index.htm New with Communicator 4.0 is the PLUGINURL parameter that directly points to the JAR file.

This sounds like the best soulution to me. But is should work on other browers than Netscape.
