Drag and drop to reorder items in a single list

Hello everyone, tl;dr: the current PluggableTextMorph/Plus does not support the reordering of items in a single list via drag and drop. Attached you find a change set that fixes this, but it might also break in other places. Thus, I kindly ask for a review. Today I found myself implementing a ToolBuilder-built list in which the items should be reorderable via drag and drop. Unfortunately, the current implementation of PluggableTextMorph/Plus does not allow this: you first have to drag the item out of the list before you can drop it in again. Seems like the list morph needs the mouse focus to be able to accept the drop. However, the current implementation explicitly releases the focus from the list upon grabbing the item. Then I changed the PluggableTextMorphPlus to not drop the focus, but keep it, when starting to drag an item. Now the focus would not even be released anymore when the item was indeed dragged out of a list if that list itself does not accept any drops (such as the method list in the system browser: it does not accept drops, but the methods can be dragged from it to the message categories list). So I have changed further methods to make the list morphs always handle dragging events, even if they are not interested in drops. But I do not know what else that might have broken. So, please have a look at the attached change sets. The one without "all" in the file name contains only the actual changes. The one with "all" also contains other relevant (unchanged) methods that I touched during my investigation. Eventually, I would like to put this or a revised edition of it in the inbox because list reordering via drag and drop should not be impossible. The third file contains a simple Model subclass with a list whose items should be reorderable via drag and drop, so you do not have to write it yourself. Grab a sample instance and open it with the ToolBuilder: ToolBuilder open: DragDropInSingleList new. In case I simply got it wrong and there is no need to change Morphic lists to achieve what I want, please tell me how to do it right. ;-) Best regards, Jakob

When did it become a good idea for selected text to be enclosed by () instead of replaced by 9 ?

In trying to see if anything had changed re WaveEditor etc I updated an image to update 16963. When I went to save this image a Squeak5.1-16963… I selected the last thre digits of the prior name (Squeak5.1-16549…) intending to type 963. Imagine my surprise - nay, alarm! - when I got ‘Squeak5.1-16(963) instead. Oh my, I said to myself, what has Pooh done now. As best I can work out this is a result of the change in TextEditor>enclose: that added ‘9’ some time ago (and which did not affect me since I normally turn off the annoying enclose stuff in preferences) combined with a more recent change to TextEditor>dispatchOnKeyboardEvent: wherein a use of TextEditor>enclose: was added near the end. I see two obviously related Preferences for enclosing text. I see this as a dangerous thing, because multiple preferences interacting on the same issue can cause chaos, not to say confusion. And every time a preference is added it is yet another sheaf of potential problems to test. So, yes, I can turn it off easily enough. Sockets, WebClient, HttpClient and friends

Looking at the code I had a minor issue with the other day when loading from SqueakMap, I see what looks like a good opportunity to cleanup and simplify some classes. Since I'm most definitely not an expert in sockets and web interfaces etc I think some input from those of you more knowledgeable would be very helpful. SqueakMap uses an HttpSocket directly to load; this has a problem in that the only error detection is to check the response for being a String. Which isn't the most robust or helpful technique. RBInternalSpellCheck does much the same, as do a few other users of #httpGet: (as an example). InstallerInternetBased uses an http socket and checks the response for responding to #reset (I imagine as a proxy for stream-like behaviour?) which doesn't seem long-term robust. Worst of all quite a few users of #httpGet: don't do any sort of checking and so will just dump users into a debugger; not our best look. I know that WebClient is a somewhat heavier class but it does seem to do a lot more helpful things like handling redirects and so on as well as some better error testing. Would it be sensible to convert as much as practical to use WebClient instead of a plain HttpSocket? Might it be better to improve HttpSocket? Some related stuff - there is an HttpClient class as well, unconnected to WebClient but used in several important looking places. Can that be improved or merged? Hi All, It's that time again. Time to raise your voices and elect your leaders! Can you believe it's been a year already? It's a time for you to stand up, help your community and volunteer to serve! Squeak wants you! Every year we elect the SOB (Squeak Oversight Board) consisting of seven members from our community. The current board members are: 1. Bert Freudenberg 2. Eliot Miranda 3. ... what exactly? There's no class comment to help out. So far as I can work out it seems to be partially a proxy for working out if the image is running in a web browser (can we do that these days? I was under the impression that was no longer doable with current browsers) and partially a sort of shim for some network-file-fetching-putting that would be different if actually running in a browser. Server timeouts and 504 return codes

A couple of weeks ago I had a problem loading something via SqueakMap that resulted in a 504 error. Chris M quite rightly pointed out that responding to a timeout with an immediate retry might not be the best thing (referencing some code I published to try to handle this problem); looking at the error more closely I finally noticed that a 504 is a *gateway* timeout rather than anything that seems likely to be a problem at the SM or MC repository server. Indeed the error came back much quicker than the 45 seconds timeout that we seem to have set for our http connections. I'm a long way from being an expert in the area of connecting to servers via gateways and what their timeous might be etc. so excuse stupid-question syndrome - I know this isn't Quora where stupid-question is the order of the day. Am I right in thinking that a 504 error means that some *intermediate* server timed out according to some setting in its internal config ? Am I right in imagining that we can't normally affect that timeout? If I have any reasonable grasp on this then we should probably detect the 504 (in part by explicitly using a WebClient and its error handling rather than the slightly wonky httpSocket faced we have currently) and retry the connection ? Any other error or a timeout at *our* end would still be best handled as an error.
