Jenkins now live

http://76.74.255.163:8080/ Our Jenkins server is now live. I'll get it running behind squeakci.org. Then I'll configure the Workspace, zip files, and directories, so that users can cut an paste Smalltalk or Codex (the Mason build system DSL) into a window to have a Squeak 4.3 image execute, run tests, create a zipped deliverable, etc. I'm about four weeks ahead of schedule, as I said I'd get this done after Smalltalk Directions. Report remappable oop and weak root table overflows as errors. Make primitiveObjectAtPut fail if used to store other than a SmallInteger into the method header. Better error message for inability to thread. Load function pointer early in ThreadedFFIPlugin's invocation checking sequence. This must come early for compatibility with the old FFIPlugin. Image-level code may assume the function pointer is loaded eagerly. Add 1007,1008 & 1009 attribute info to version info on linux, & 1009 on Windows. Add -version option to Mac VM (with similar info to linux). Include vm-display-fbdev on linux. Exclude fbdev in the newspeak build. Simplify ticker for older linuxes. -- best, Eliot

Some Community numbers

Hi! Just some estimated[1] numbers[2]: Currently 1013 people are actively subscribed to the squeak-dev mailing list. Looking at the past year until now about 64 people have posted something at least once per month on average (6% of active subscribers as of today). The same for the last three months gives 51 people. So any new Modulesystem or fancy Squeak Map Server gonna change that trend? BTW, the Google+ Page attracted around 200 people. As with squeak-dev there isn't too much going on. Alex [1] I didn't bother to filter/join crosspostings, commit messages nor people with multiple e-mail addresses [2] wget, grep, sed, uniq, sort, wc are my friends

OSProcess and multiline input

I'm trying to pass a multiline argument, but none of the things that work in the shell seem to work with OSP. I passed both of the following to PipeableOSProcess>>waitForCommand: with a "No such file or directory" error, which usually means that the multiline part was not processed correctly. However, if I copy/paste them into the shell, they work fine heredoc: '/usr/bin/osascript -ss <<-EOF tell application "Safari" to activate tell application "Terminal" to activate EOF' double-quoted string: '/usr/bin/osascript -ss -e " tell application \"Safari\" to activate tell application \"Terminal\" to activate"' Why are these not working? INRIA has a new call for PhD Student positions. Description ============ To support the creation and evolution of complex systems, dynamic languages provide support for reflection. A reflective system contains a model of itself to enable runtime change: if we change the model, the system changes and vice versa. Reflection allows the programmer to do any kind of change at runtime, even those that render the system useless or breach any kind of security guarantees. Reflection is an established research theme and has seen a lot of work over the last decades. The question of how to control reflection and related that of secure reflective systems in general has not seen much research activity. The goal of this PhD is to propose a new secure reflective language kernel for dynamic languages. The following points should be explored: - Study existing models of security. - Study existing reflective systems and especially prior work on security and reflection. - Propose a new, secure model of reflection. - Implemented the model in a dynamic, object-oriented language. Are Objects really hard?

Hi guys, Again one interesting topic for this weekend to discuss. David Nolen, a Lisp and JavaScript guy posted in his blog an article titled Illiterate Programming [1] where he said: "...Yet I think Smalltalk still fundamentally failed (remember this is a programming language originally designed to scale from children to adults) because *Objects are really hard* and no-one really understands to this day how to do them right...." He links to Alan Kay post [2] back in 1998 where he talks about problems with inheritance: "Here are a few problems in the naive inheritance systems we use today: confusions of Taxonomy and Parentage, of Specialization and Refinement, of Parts and Wholes, of Semantics and Pragmatics..." Let we concentrate on broader "Objects are really hard and no-one really understands to this day how to do them right" claim and not merely inheritance, please.
