Trying to build SerialPlugin for IrDA under MPW (MacOS 8.6)

Hi, I recently got a serial IrDA adapter and wanted to play around with it under Squeak. This adapter has a baudrate switching mechanism which depends on toggling the DTR and RTS lines in the correct sequence. To support this, I wanted to build a new SerialPlugin with an additional primitive. However, the plugin as built with MPW does not seem to be accepted by the VM, which still uses the internal plugin in all cases. I've tried placing the plugin in a 'Plugins' subfolder of the VM's folder, and then directly into the VM folder, without any success. I have considered placing debug outputs in appropriate places in the VM, but building a complete VM with MPW is not easy - I would have to create an MPW makefile for the whole shebang, which is more work than I can invest at the moment. Does any of you Mac aficionados have an idea where the problem could be? I have appended the plugin and corresponding source files in a ZIP file (it's not big) so if you want to try it out you could do it right now :-) BTW, would it make sense to incorporate support for switching serial port parameters of an open port into the standard plugin? Closing and opening a port just to change the baud rate seems a little overkill... Cheers, Hans-Martin

Smalltalk Implementation of the Viable System Model

I've been slowly piecing together an implementation of what is called the Viable System Model, or VSM. The model was developed by operations research theorist and cybernetician Stafford Beer in the early 70's. One of the best known projects to use the VSM was an attempted real-time computer-controlled planned economy in the years 1970 to 1973. It was called Project Cybersyn. The system used a telex network and applications running on an IBM 360 computer. I've been working on a Smalltalk implementation of the model, that I'm calling the Viable System Agent. It's come far enough along, that I think it is ready to show. See the unit tests for how it might be used. I have to add that it is just a beginning. If you have previously seen Beers ideas in operations research and cybernetics, you might find it interesting. How Moprhs is rendered

To optimise the DrGeo canvas (get it faster), I try to understand in detail how is done the rendering of Morphs embedded in a pasteupmorph. I did not find any detailed information on the Internet about that. Any pointer? Right now, DrGeo canvas is a pasteUpMorph, the line, segment, point, circle, etc. are all Morph added in the pasteUpMoprh. Cmd-h on Mac OS X?

I recently started using Mac for Squeak coding. I knew this has been a problem for some time but what can I do to setSearchString: when I pressed Cmd-h? Also, when I run a 3.8-derived image on "Squeak 5.7.4.1" on OS 10.6.7, I get a weird display artifact. Since the VM is for cocoa, I just shouldn't even bother running it and use "Squeak 4.2.5beta1U" instead? -- Yoshiki

cannot run unit-tests under Cog

In a stock Squeak4.3alpha-11481.image, I cannot seem to run the test-suite under the 2486 or 2487 releases of Cog. It doesn't get very far before I see the following on stdout: $ mprotect(x,y,PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE): Cannot allocate memory and the entire OS becomes very sluggish (perhaps writing out a core dump). The VM crashes with: [7]+ Segmentation fault (core dumped) squeak Squeak4.3alpha-11481.image They seemed to run under the interpreter VM. Can anyone else reproduce this?

Porting JUnit's Theories to SUnit?

Has anyone looked into porting JUnit 4's Theories into SUnit? (NUnit also uses theories, in 2.5) In brief, a Theory is a test that takes a parameter. So what before might say testMyFooPrintsIntegersHomoiconically -1 to: 1 do: [:i | self assert: i myFoo = i printString description: 'Failure for integer ', i printString] becomes testMyFooPrintsIntegersHomoiconically: anInteger self assert: anInteger myFoo = anInteger printString description: 'Failure for integer ', anInteger printString You define a bunch of DataPoints, and then the runner runs that test for every data point. In JUnit data points are defined through constants with @DataPoint/@DataPoints annotations, but of course we can do them however we want. Further, theories can make assumptions, which are essentially pretest filters. For instance, in a TestCase dealing with real algebra, a test for square roots might say testSquareRootReturnsRoot: anInteger self assumeThat: [anInteger > 0]. "Rest of test" and then the test would only run on positive data points. The essential idea is simply decoupling the test itself - the theory - from the data, so you don't have to roll your own looping construct when testing multiple data points. frank

doubleClick-event without a click-Event?

Hello! Is it possible to get doubleClick-event without a click-event before? Example: m := Morph new. m on: #mouseUp send: #value to: [ Transcript show: 'click'; cr. ]. m on: #doubleClick send: #value to: [ Transcript show: 'doubleClick'; cr. ]. m openInWorld. DoubleClick this morph and you get the following output: click doubleClick I expected not to get the click event if a doubleClick is detected... I tried it also via subclassing, implementing mouseDown: with "evt hand waitForClicksOrDrag: self event: evt"...but it leads to the same behaviour. Any hints on this? Best regards, r2ruyu-nana :)

A friend of a friend passed along a valid concern today: Hudson/Jenkins can run arbitrary shell commands. People all over the place are running public Hudson servers, so I don't think this is necessarily of *great* concern, I mean we can probably just run it in a chroot jail and call it golden. That said, while I've set up several different CI solutions for internal use by software teams, it was always behind a corporate firewall. This will be my first world-facing adventure with continuous integration. I think this is worth talking about. Does anyone here have any experience to share that we can potentially learn from?
