Carbon and Cocoa (was [squeak-dev] Balloon3D: not loading in trunk)

"looking at Carbon, learning C" versus "looking at the objc frameworks that replace Carbon" ?" Yes. Carbon uses C; Cocoa uses Objective C. More to the point for what we're talking about, if you look at the Mac source code for the VM you'll see Carbon and iOS (Cocoa) folders. I thought the VM source to look at was in the Carbon folder and the iOS code was just for actual mobile devices that John Macintosh built. Igor and Esteban are moving towards using Cocoa and Objective C. So, I'm learning Objective C and looking in the iOS folder. Chris

Balloon3D: not loading in trunk

"I got a failure on VRML component as in attached log and got stuck... Any ideas about how to proceed?" Yes, you should abandon using anything that requires VRML. That technology is dead. That project on SqueakSource is dated from 2004. Andreas Raab has moved on from anything related to VRML, and I imagine you might benefit from doing the same. What is he using in it's place now? Probably OpenGL or something. I was looking at Carbon to learn about VMs. I went to ESUG, met the VM maintainers, and I got the message that I should move on to Objective C, because that's where they were going. So that's what I'm doing. I'm involved in helping to bring out the next image. The idea that the new image has to be able to load in any code from anywhere in Squeak's past just depresses me. As a team and a community we only have so many resources and they need to be spent wisely on things like making the image smaller with each iteration. I think expectations about such things need to be managed. At some point we've just got to say that that's the past. If you want to use old code then you need to stick with old images. If 4.3 doesn't accommodate VRML, I don't see how you can expect it to. The prospect exhausts me even before I've started working on the 4.3 release. The main reason for trying to load Ballooon3D was to get Alice working in Squeak, if somebody has any suggestions about how to get that working I am all ears... Hi All, this quick hack (below) is perhaps wrong. Perhaps we should simply accept underscores in selectors period, and not query the preference. Instead perhaps tokenish should be redefined to allow underscores? I'd appreciate input from those that have thought about this area carefully (I have not). Balloon3D: not loading in trunk

Hi all, has anybody succeeded to load Balloon3D on Trunk? I tried 1. get Squeak4.3alpha-11636.zip 2. update to latest Trunk 3. load Balloon3D (load Balloon3D-1.1.2.mcm) I got a failure on VRML component as in attached log and got stuck... Not the last versions of all packages , but all what is into was tested on Mac. Let me know some you missed. I working on Pharo 1.4 now, if some day figure how to have a FunPharo, i cook it. Color from pixel value bug

Hello, Working in Squeak 4.1, I stumbled upon a PNG image saving bug, which I traced down to the fact that ((Color black pixelWordForDepth: 32) asColorOfDepth: 32) = Color black is false. I found something looking like a fix, which is attached. Then I looked at Squeak 4.3 (update 11636) to see if someone else already fixed that bug, and indeed Nicolas Cellier did, in December 2010, by modifying Color>>pixelValueForDepth: But we still have ((Color black pixelWordForDepth: 32) asColorOfDepth: 32) = Color black false, because black is being replaced with, as the comment says, the "closest non-transparent black" At this point I guess I missed something, since I have no idea of what this business of "transparent black" is about.
