Thanks for the feedback everyone. I tried Todd's suggestion of minor changes to the guilty methods, but didn't see any change to the status of the classes - I suspect that the references may be too obscured for me to uncover them all. Running Bert's fix removed the immediate issue, but then RB had a problem with anObsoleteT1 (Trait) created by the same suite of tests. This appears to be totally unreferenced and I don't understand Traits at all so I'm ignoring it, as I've come up with a fix for RB. So as Jerome suggested I've raised the bug on Mantis (#5910). I've added a simple fix to RB as bug #5911 which makes it exclude obsolete classes from its consideration. This allows RB to refactor successfully, but I can't guarantee that it doesn't introduce any issues. Cheers, Michael

Even if it happens as an official standards committee, it would be a "small group of those with the necessary skills, time, interest and commitment". A standards committee is more likely to happen if there is already a de facto standard. So, do it! -Ralph

Alan, If you are going to be at Smalltalk Solutions this year perhaps we can talk about Smalltalk portability. but I don't know how to operate the FileList opened by TIFFSelfTest displayResults... Thanks for making the changes, Koji. I've been able to narrow the problem down. What I've been trying to do is add a color TIFF image to the pdf, that is add a color bitmap. I would actually prefer to add a Form, but SPDF is TIFF centric. TIFFImage has a class method TIFFImage fromFileNamed: aString ^self fromFile: (Filename named: aString) where Filename doesn't exist as a class. TIFFImage fromFile: aFilename | readStream | readStream := aFilename readStream. readStream binary. ^self fromByteArray: readStream contents So I thought to add a class method fromFileWithName: aFilename | readStream | readStream := StandardFileStream readOnlyFileNamed: aFilename. readStream binary. ^self fromByteArray: readStream contents and duplicate test13 changing the image aquisition to image := (TIFFImage fromFileWithName:'blokken.tif') directories first. If I put an uncompressed 24-bit TIFF in blokken.tif, an invalid pdf file is created. If I put in a uncompressed 4-bit TIFF with an odd width, the process halts with: Halt: No class is ready to handle tag #320. With an even width the invalid pdf is created again. A b/w tiff has the same problems but the 24-bit TIFF does not have the even/odd problems. Stephan

Hi all, I posted this to the beginners list, and got some help understanding the problem, but I didn't get to a solution - can anyone help? I was playing with the test runner and one of the tests seems to have left many Obsolete classes hanging around that I'm unable to remove; this means that I'm having problems using the Refactoring Browser. In order to track the classes down I followed the hints on http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/2631 ; when I got to bringing up the Pointer Finder it said: #ProtoObject -> ProtoObject class subclasses: Array 9: AnObsoleteC3 class I inspected protoObject and the subclasses array has 105 members, many of them repeated: {Object . ObjectOut . ImageSegmentRootStub . MessageCatcher . DynamicBindingsInfo . MaMinimalObject . MAConditionBuilder . MAProxyObject . AnObsoleteC3 . AnObsoleteC4 . AnObsoleteC6 . AnObsoleteC3 . AnObsoleteC4 . AnObsoleteC6 . AnObsoleteC3 . AnObsoleteC4 . AnObsoleteC6 . AnObsoleteC3 . AnObsoleteC4 . AnObsoleteC6 . AnObsoleteC3 . AnObsoleteC4 . AnObsoleteC6 . ...etc... } This didn't look good, so I then did a search through references to ProtoObject, and found that TraitsResource (in Traits-Tests) looks like the guilty party - it has three methods setUpTrivialRequiresFixture, setUpTwoLevelRequiresFixture, setUpTranslatingRequiresFixture - these include lines like (for C3, C4, C6): self c3: (self createClassNamed: #C3 superclass: ProtoObject uses: { }). self c3 superclass: nil. Another run of the Traits-Tests suite left me with yet more of these obsolete classes. I have absolutely no idea how to get rid of these classes. Can anybody help me take this any further?

Keith, Running tests from the browser is a fine idea. Can a test case be a member of more than one suite in your approach? I suspect that most of the time, I run more tests than I really need to run, which is fine to a point. Early in trying to fix something, I will lock in on one test and #prod: that until it passes anyway, so there is little harm in snaring some extra tests. With that said, some bugs work down to a struggle among some stubborn test methods (e.g. any three will pass but not all of them), at which point it is nice to be able to tweak the set that runs. I got started doing this kind of testing in part because Dolphin's sunit browser did not handle selections as well as I wanted. It would run selected tests, but the selection would get clobbered with the resets, and (my fault I realize) it was too easy to run all vs. running the selected methods. It started as a compromise, but I quickly grew to like using the browser for getting the big picture and then using doits to drive debugging of failing tests. I _think_ the runner I see in Squeak does a good job of selection handling, but I have not used it enough to give a good judgement. Bill Keith Hodges: With so much in the class hierarchy, including extra functionality such as time-outs in my TestCasePlus class moving an arbitrary test out to another class just would not work. Tests are rarely just isolated items.
