Fed up with the web

Dear Squeakers and Tweakers, I have been charged with building a website for a creative arts group, and I have to say I am fed up with the web, web2.0, AJAX, even Seaside (sorry avi) and all the rest. Its a long story I have been coding javascript in a little gizmo called TiddlyWiki for a year or so to try and do something a little clever with Web Browsers as a client, to be honest its hard work. This week I was looking at Laszlo a fairly cool tool (though on the same day I found a book about Laszlo son of Dracula which didn't bode well). In Laszlo you throw together an XML file which reflects the structure of your UI, the sort of thing you would do with a drag and drop GUI builder 15 years ago, sprinkled with some javascript for defining behaviours, and pop your data into a second XML file. This text file collection is requested by your browser which (when developing) hits a Java Tomcat serverlet which churns compilers for a minute or so to produce a swf file that will run on a flash plugin (but it doesnt bother to use any features of flash it just wants the renderer and vm). Within 1 day I find that Laszlo cant tile a graphic as a background and I hunt around and find it has a draw canvas that implements part of the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group spec for drawing. I looked at this spec and the future of the humble browser looks ominous, complicated is not the word for it. In this whole venture all I am thinking is What a mess! Then I found Tweak, and loaded a squeak image - as you do - and lo, we launch pretty quickly dont we, compare that with mozilla or acrobat and I am on a 500Mhz box remember the old days? All I want is to draw a picture, display some text, and share it with my friends. It would be nice if that text was familiar to my friends and you could click on things the way they are used to, but thats all I am asking for. A bit of user interactivity might be nice. So... what would it take to simply take squeak and present it in such a way as to be familiar to the average web browser user. Take a look a Tweak, Large fonts and we are almost there, some form of text layout engine, have text with inlined images and widgets. We are so close to having something useable but we never quite make it. thoughts anyone? Keith ___________________________________________________________ All new Yahoo! Ajax + squeak = collaborative desktops ?

Hi there ! Since I discovered this website (www.netvibes.com), I found that the technology used (ajax) is really interesting : we are using this website as a shared virtual desktop and it's amazingly efficient. It opens a new dimension for collaborative works as it was the case for wikis. (just use it and you will see ! Moreover I realized the importance of RSS feed throught this kind of site). Does someone know if such a techno is available for squeak (maybe seaside ?). I'm especially interested in the "post-it" feature we are using intensively. With netvibes, you have just to drag and drop a post-it on the desk and write on it, all is saved on the fly (no more "save" button as it is the case for wikis). I find this simple feature really cool ! Thanks ! Samir

Hello, can i ask what happened to Shout in class browser and other tools? I can see only pretty print which i think is not as amazing as shout is in 3.8 (even if it's really Shout what i'm talking about). Is there a possibility to have Shout in 3.9, or whatever needs to be installed to get a syntax highlighting working? Bye.

Setting Up a Server to Handle Squeak Projects

OK, I downloaded the Squeak plug-in and I seem to be able to access .pr files stored on other sites. But how do I deploy a Squeak project as a plugin? I think the questions I need answered are: 1. What does the server (Apache) need to know in order to serve Squeak projects as files? Anything? 2. Will detection of the plugin be semi-automatic? I.e., if a user without the plugin tries to download a Squeak project, will he get an error, an ugly binary dump or something meaningful? 3. Anything else I need to know about deployment? Thanks. Missing StarBrowser for Kom HttpServer

** apologies for multiple copies ** Expanding the Research School "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering" at Hasso-Plattner-Institute Hasso-Plattner-Institute (HPI) is a privately financed institute affiliated with the University of Potsdam. The Institute's founder and endower Professor Hasso Plattner, who is also co-founder and chairman of the supervisory board of SAP AG, has created the opportunity for students to enjoy a unique elite education in IT systems engineering in a professional and effective research environment with a strong practice orientation. In 2005, HPI has initiated the highly successful research school on "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering" under the scientific guidance of Profs. Dres.
