[Fix] Metaclasses and --all-- method category

In the definition of a the metamodel of the OB code browser, the allCategory was not added to the metaclass node. It means that you could not get the --all-- method category when browsing a metaclass. This fix does it. You can now see all the methods of a metaclass. Please, forgive me if it is not the right way to submit changes and enhancement... Feel free to point me a _short_ and concise description about how to submit a fix, if I got it completely wrong. size limit in changes file

Hi there, i've reached the size limit in my .changes file, im using a 3.7 image under Linux Fedora C1 with a 3.6 VM. What action can i do as mentioned in the error message? there's some way to reduce the changes file or better to increase size limit? thanks in advance for any suggestion. Contacting the board?

Hi Folks - Just curious: What is the "correct" way to contact the board these days? The web site doesn't have any contact information but links only to the (outdated?) wiki in Berne which doesn't have any contact information either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, - Andreas

Use FFI with Linux / Ubuntu ?

Hello, I'm squeak newbie and I want to use a C DLL with FFI on Linux (I use the The Ubuntu Linux distribution). I have a function test which is written in a Linux C DLL. It works when I call it from an exe. When I call it from my class I obtain the error message : "Error: unable to find function address" --------------------------------------------------------------------- TestClass>>testLinux <cdecl: void 'test' (void) module: 'test.so'> ^self externalCallFailed --------------------------------------------------------------------- I use FFI with windows for an C Windows DLL and it works correctly, so is the FFI package works with Linux / Ubuntu ? thanks, Vincent

It would be easier to catch and therefore to test with a specific subclass of Exception. I would claim that almost all (happy for any counter example) uses of "self error:" are indicating that some (maybe implicit) precondition fails. Being radical I would say in above situation the precondition just fails always, meaning that this method would never make sense to be called on Intervals. Using traits we shouldn't need the strange idiom to overwrite template or other superclass methods, that do not work in special subclasses, any more. (It would be really tedious to enumerate all methods on all classes which do not work... ;-) If the error string is telling me why the precondition fails, good. Why would I want to bother with different kinds of exceptions here? By the way, I call a test, which tests the failing of a precondition, "pessimistic method example", but I am still open for a better name. People did not like the name "counter example" or "negative example", though I still would prefer one of these names and I am about to rename... [Newbie] - Building a Morphic UI - more

Further to my previous newbie submission of a few days ago... [Previously on this thread... I have an graphical engineering application in VisualWorks ST that I am trying to port to Squeak for my self edification and training.] I have managed to build the basic UI except for the important bit - the graphics. I have a few buttons with callbacks, a slider and some radio buttons. It has been slow and extremely frustrating, going step by step, feeling my way in the darkness of a lack of documentation. Using LayouPolicies and LayoutFrames I have managed to create a UI that looks OK-ish, and stretches and scales itself how I want. There are still look and feel issues I don't like, such as the title bar and its constant regeneration that causes any changes of mine ot be lost. The resultant code is very mucky but will be refactored when the time is right. I have also managed to suppress the haloes for UI components by modifying something in Morph. Woo-hoo! Before I get onto the "big one"... Although radio buttons are ThreePhaseButtonMorphs, how do you group them so that switching one on turns the others off, unless you manage it by hand (again)? I have 2 different radio button groups. Sounds like there is scope for a standard widget - a RadioButtonGroup. As it is, radio buttons have extremely weird behaviour as one has to drag the cursor off them to turn them off. The BIG ONE... Below the SystemWindow what Morph hierarchy do I construct in order to be able to draw my model in a View (or is it Form) that I can pan around with horizontal and vertical scroll bars and scale. I also need to be able to pick objects on screen and move them around as well as to be able to locate points in the model space. I need some form of mouse controller. I can't see where mouse down/up/move events get managed. I have resorted to looking at the Purple Book as well as Mark Guzdial's, but neither show an example similar to what I would expect or want. Where does the Form come in? Is this the GraphicsContext in VW? Currently I have a subclass of StandardSystemView which accesses my model. This needs to be displayed on a Form, I presume. But I think, and possibly misunderstand, that I am to be creating an ImageMorph on a Form in the SystemWindow, but this should dynamically change as I move bits of my model around by cursor events. When does the displayOn: message get sent? To help in my BIG ISSUE, a component hierarchy diagram might be useful to show the nesting of UI components in the SystemWindow. And how the mouse/cursor interaction is managed would be useful too. <gripe> Following from one contributer's suggestion that I can modify anything in Squeak I wish. I do not think the basic Squeak UI widget set has sufficient functionality nor consistency with other UI systems for one to be able to use them without serious modification. And I would rather spend my time doing the _useful_ bits of engineering rather than wasting a disproportionate amount of time scrabbling around at the bottom of the system in order to create a usable UI. BTW - The ProgrammingMorphs package does not load into Squeak 3.8. Over the last few years, I have had to work building UIs in different systems, and I am developing an extreme aversion to them! Whichever system you use, it takes far too many steps to get information from the user into the _real_ program that does the work. Sorry this appears to be a long gripe, but if I can't see reasonable progress in my short supply of spare time, I'll just give up and go juggling instead! </gripe> -- Dugald

VM doesNotUnderstand stack question

Hi I'm currently teaching the ObjVlisp reflective kernel and the students have to implement it in VW. Now I realized that I have a bug for the error (equivalent of DNU). And I wanted to know how the squeak VM does it. My bug is the following one: when a message is not understood, the message error is raised. By default on Object error raises an Error. Now when I redefine the method error on a class, I do not cancel the application of the method that was not found. So I end up applying (value: self in the unarySend: method below) the old arguments of the not-found message to the result of the redefined error method and this should not happen. I have the impression that the solution is to cancel the application of the found method when there is an error. And I wanted to know what the Squeak VM does? Here how I did it in my ObjVlisp implementation: Obj is a subclass of Array I use to represent objects and block to represent methods Obj>>lookup: selector for: anObjObject ^(self doesUnderstand: selector) ifTrue: [ self bodyOfMethod: selector] ifFalse: [self objName = #ObjObject ifFalse: [ (Obj giveClassNamed: self objSuperclassId) lookup: selector for: anObjObject.] ifTrue: [ anObjObject binarySend: #error with: selector "this should be escaping the flow"]]. So the following code work well when I do not redefine error but not when I redefine it.

intel compiler flag clues

I'm wondering if anyone has favorite intel GCC compile flag clues they would like to share when one compiles a VM. tossing -Os at GCC 4.0 for the mac intel port seems so primitive.... -- ======================================================================== === John M. Hi Simon, Thanks for the acknowledgement. I agree it would be good to have a way at getting at the changes. It has occured to me from the example of Squeak Weekly that the qnd way to collect a complete change log would be to just hyperlink to the list of announcements on squeakdev and keep this list on a wiki page ala Giovanni Corriga's wonderful news reports. 1) This has the advantage of being simple to maintain. 2) Delegatable to someone ready to add service. (We should not overburden the release team with stuff when we can spread the effort around.) And #)It could then act as a source for someone to collect all the info in one place.
