module: 'SoundPlugin' on Mac OS.

Hello squeak-dev, I am developing a Squeak application that is supposed to run on Microsoft Windows and on Macs. Recently I encountered the the following problem: I do RecordingControlsMorph new openCenteredInWorld this uses the SoundRecorder object. On Windows everything works fine, but on Mac OS X I get an error message from SoundRecorder: <primitive: 'primitiveSoundGetRecordingSampleRate' module:'SoundPlugin'> saying that SoundPlugin is not available. I assume there is no SoundPlugin for Mac OS. Would it be possible to build a VM with this plugin or can I just download and install it as an external plugin. Thank you. The systems I am running the application on are System 1: Microsoft Windows XP prof. Ver 2002 Service Pack 2, version VM: Squeak3.8-6665. Mantis/Installer proposed new convention

You can now install a bug fix from mantis using Installer fixBug: 4874. how about that! To achieve this I have updated Installer to look for code embedded in a mantis page in a user supplied note marked like so. e.g. {fix} Installer mantis bug: 4874 fix: 'Join.4.cs'. "{test}" Installer mantis bug: 4874 fix: 'JoinTest.1.cs'. {/fix} I propose that this might be adopted as a new mantis convention for publishing completed ready to harvest fixes. If you only want the bug fix and are not interested in the test code then Installer justFixBug: 4874. will do the trick. To be informed if a bugfix that you are loading from mantis might have been updated you can also give installer a date to check against. Saving workspace in monticello

Callbacks from C into Squeak

Callbacks from C into Smalltalk We currently use VSE (Visual Smalltalk Enterprise). If you have a C callback into VSE, while the callback is running, it is very difficult to debug. If the callback halts, or there is an error, you can't debug and resume in the normal way that you can in Smalltalk. Apparently this is something to do with VSE using the machine stack as the Smalltalk stack. However, one of the nice things about VSE is: if I put a halt in the callback, will I see the entire stack, including the methods before the initial entry into C. Also if I throw an exception in the call back that is not caught in the callback, will it be caught further down the stack by code running before the initial entry into C. If it a resumable exception, I can resume as per normal. Now, we do a lot of numerical computing, re-using all the C and Fortran libraries that are already out there. It is common in a numerical library to use callbacks. Say you want to integrate f(x). The integrator is written in Fortran, and f(x) is written in Smalltalk. You need a way for the integrator to call f(x), and you do that with a callback. So to leverage these libraries we need an easy way to do callbacks, and once you have a callback you need a way of debugging these callbacks that a mathematician (rather than a comuputer scientist) will feel comfortable with. So my questioin is: when you callback into Squeak from C/Fortran, can you throw and catch exceptions, halt, debug and resume execution of the callback in the normal Smalltalk way. Or does the fact that you are in a callback compromise Smalltalk's usual execution? Cheers Daniel

Floating point performance and a GPU

I am guessing it would require at least a major rewrite and maybe an entire redesign of Squeak to make any use of the multithreaded GPU environment. I have the impression that there are major restrictions on the overall size of programs running on a GPU, which could be a problem. There are other efforts that look like the Folding@Home project, at least for the local system, like NVidia's Cuda (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda.html) and the GPGPU project (http://www.gpgpu.org/).

Squeak and Seaside Stability

Has anyone had an issue with a deployment of Seaside locking up, and killing access to the box via networking when hosting on windows server 2003? I'm running a 3.9 image in prod and on occasion it stops working, but when it dies, it seems to take out the network and other scheduled processes that copy files across the network start failing as well. Killing Squeak and restarting it fixes it and allows the network to start working again as well, I haven't a clue what's going on, and Squeak itself, goes black and I loose the UI, so I can't even debug the issue. I've had to resort to running Squeak as a service and resetting it on a schedule to give the appearance of stability, but I'm not too happy with that solution. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much, i managed to download these files from my workplace (i still don't know the reason the server was inaccessible, maybe my isp). It all works as it should, i can even use your precompiled VM, cause it seems to be a little modified and works ok with Genius mice (unlike any stock Squeak/Croquet win32 VM). If you can give me any guidelines to how to get the Unicode working, i could try to fix it myself (i have a complete set of the latest DejaVu fonts loaded and they behave as if there was only the basic character set - if i load them as TrueType, they look ugly, but the character set is complete).
