[SM][BUG] Error: can't find EOCD position

A couple of my SqueakMap entries (maybe more, I have not checked them all) have decided to stop working. I got the AioPlugin entry working again by re-saving the entry, but XDisplayControlPlugin is screwed up and I can't seem to convince it to start working again. What the user sees from a SqueakMap Package Loader is a debugger with the rather unhelpful "Error: can't find EOCD position" message. <rant> How many other SqueakMap entries are messed up and the authors don't even know it? And what is a person supposed to think when they see this? It makes people think that AioPlugin and XDisplayControlPlugin are broken, unmaintained, and unavailable, none of which is true. </rant> Dave

Martin, Re tranparency of remote objects: it is a great idea if not taken too far. Remote objects are different from local ones. In particular, they are slower and vastly less reliable than their local counterparts. With that said, there is nothing wrong with an ORB that tries to make them as transparent as possible, as long as you realize that you will have to work to avoid punishing your user over timeouts and lost connections. ========================== As a sidenote: I have difficulties to understand how Smalltalk works, especially the way method calls eventually resolve to primitive calls. I'd be most grateful for an explanation the other way round, i.e. starting with the primitives and the way the entire system builds up from them. ========================== IMHO, (if you have not already done so) you should learn how to use Smalltalk before you try to engineer complicated proxies or turn yourself into a VM hacker, etc. In short though, look at Object>>at:. Note the call to primitive 60, and the code below it. If the primitive succeeds, that's it; the Smalltalk code below it is used only if the primitive fails. The idea is that primitives handle the simple and frequent, and the more flexible Smalltalk code can be used for the rare and the complicated. For a better explanation, see the end of the chapter on the graphics kernel in Goldberg and Robson (aka "the purple book" or, if you are lucky, "the blue book"[*]). With that said, I strongly believe that you should be comfortable solving problems and/or developing software in Smalltalk before you read the blue/purple book. You will get more out of it, and be in a better position to realize just how far PARC was ahead of the pack. where is the ImageImports repository?

Hi all, I have been serving up images for Seaside via Apache. I just read Avi's comment of Thu Sep 9 10 2004 on the thread called [Using image tags in Seaside] saying... "Anyway, there are basically two options: - have the images hosted externally to Seaside, and use image tags with external URLs: html image: 'http://imagehost.com/myimage.jpg' altText: 'My Image' - suck the image data into your (Squeak) image, and serve it directly from Seaside: html imageWithForm: (MyImages at: #someImage) I prefer the second, from a deployment point of view, because you end up with just one .image file to copy around. It's also great for dynamically generated images (use PlotMorph to generate live charts, for example). But having something like apache serving static images can be a performance win." What I am trying to figure out is how to get the images into a class he calls MyImages. I tried using FileList which has an import button which has balloon help which says "Load a graphic placing it in the ImageImports repository. I did the import and can't see where it is. Did a search for ImageImports class but nada. I would appreciate any help on how to import image files from the hard drive and then define a class which would serve it. Thank you, bakki

ICal question

Does anyone have any code that is using Recurrence Rules? I see them in the ICal-Model category and I am using them to set up recurring events, but I didn't see any methods or anything for calculating what dates will actually happen from the rule. Before I write something up I thought I would check.

About 512 MB changes patch

Hi Ok, I had an 3.9 7051 image that was very close at 32 MB. I could either rebuild a new image from scratch or use the patch from Klaus. Now I knew about the risks (wich are why it's not in 3.9) and that it has not seen enough testing. But if nobody tests it because it has not seen enough testing then nobody will test it and it will never see enogh testing. So it basically boiled down to 'Who if not me? When if not now?' Hi I would like to annonce my project to build a Library for processing audio and video material with squeak. I put a 1st version on the SqueakSource at kilana.unibe.ch. It's not much yet. But you can load and analyze avi container with mpeg 4 video and mp2 and mp3 audio content. I did this because I needed a tool to repair some broken avi files. Other tools I tried just failed badly. Try this: RIFFArchive openOn: 'test.avi' "use explore it to get a nice tree view of the chunks in the avi" "open a transcript and execute the following to get some information about the contents" (RIFFArchive openOn: 'test.avi') analyzeVideoStream "To extract the streams inside the avi container do:" (RIFFArchive openOn: 'some.avi') extractAllStreamsToFile: 'base_fileName'. "If you have raw streams you can create an avi this way:" | avi | avi := AVIFile with: (M4VStream on: 'video.m4v') with: (MPAStream on: 'audio.mp3'). avi runtime: 100. avi frameRate: 24000 / 1001. avi createIndex. "not working yet" avi writeTo: (StandardFileStream newFileNamed: 'test.avi') Here is my tentative todo list. - write more documentation and tests - cleanup and speedup - add more container formats like mp4, matroska - add mpeg2 handling (-> dvd authoring???) - connect with the other multimedia bits in squeak (sound, video playing, ...) Hi I have a question: since I changed my address to gmail I do not see my reply to certain email in the mailing-list. It seems that other see them. Does anybody experience the same? Is it a setup in the gmail account. Sorry but I never realized how disrupting it was when reading thread to not see your own emails :) Stef
