[BUG]FileList2(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand:

Just trying to open FileList2 (open menu item on orange and blue Mpeg morphs). Looking at the "working" star cursor, it does look rather like it's trying to open twice? Yes, but if you recompile your home method I think it will fix it. The block's method trailer is supposed to point to it source via a RemoteStringSection but for some reason it isn't getting set all the way. Before it turns into a RemoteStringSection it holds its source range, which is what your seeing. I will fix this soon. I have been working on speeding up the block closure version even more (without adding other enhancements like Scott's method cache enhancements). I will post the new version soon with some fixes. That compilation technology would allow collection classes, streams, and iterations with recognisably the Smalltalk architecture to work at C++ speeds or better. The "assertion" technology (inherited class invariants, method preconditions, and method postconditions; loop variants and invariants; specific checks) helps to pinpoint errors quicker than you could with a debugger. What Eiffel sacrifices is the DYNAMIC character of Smalltalk, and of course its IDE. (I haven't tried ISE's system and don't know how well "Melting Ice" works in practice.) The beauty and power of Squeak is amazing; its fragility is scary. By this I mean the way things stop working between one release and the next, the number of projects out there that just don't load any more. On the one hand that kind of thing practically doesn't happen in Eiffel; on the other hand such projects could never have been written in Eiffel in the first place. But let's NOT blame the collections/streams ARCHITECTURE for anything, OK?

Announcing: The first ever SqueakNews Squeak Developer of the year Award Nominations in by: 10th February, 2002 Announcement: 16th February, 2002 Squeak News is introducing a yearly award for the person/s who contributed to Squeak significantly. This year we'll have a very informal and rush selection. We will exclude SqC members in order to save the awards for the rest of us mortals (They are only eligible for lifetime achievement awards). Also SqueakNews employees and management are excluded :(. However excluded people can still nominate others. (our authors and volunteers are independent of Squeak News and they CAN be nominated). The panel again will be formed very informally from among SqueakNews employees and management, interested SqC members, members of the Squeak community and other prominent people who have maintaned interest in Squeak. In order to be eligible a person or persons and their work must be nominated by an individual or a group of individuals. You can nominate yourself and your own work. We do not accept anonymous nominations. [FIX] update to 64 bit conversion routines.

Mmm I posted this via Celeste about 2 1/2 hours ago, but never saw it get to the list? So I'll post again using Eudora. This patches the conversion routines to check for conversion errors so that you can't stuff 100 factorial into a 64 bit integer (or 32 if that is all your compiler allows). -- -- =========================================================================== John M.
