Ouch! This is slightly harsh. Perl is a step up from the C, /bin/sh, and awk that Unix programmers used to use all the time. Java is a big step up from C++. So in both cases, people really do use them because they are better languages. Maybe not good, but better than what they are used to. Lex PS -- any language where Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is a real problem, should be taken out back and summarily executed. Or maybe it's programmers who don't make abstractions for the things they do all the time. Either way, IMNSHO, programming should *not* be dominated by keyboard typing speed.

Tansel, This is excellent news and I am particularly happy to hear that you are also working on a Mac version. It looks possible that I might be getting back into that world sometime in the next few weeks unless we find someone with more recent Mac experience work on our Mac side. If anyone out there knows anyone looking for a Mac position in Santa Cruz, let me know. This will make one less point that the C guys can say "Look, you can't even do xxxx in Smalltalk". I may take you up later on the offer of a pre-alpha depending on scheduling. Right now we have a release close by so all my cycles are allocated. Thanks for the quick response. Great speed Squeak

I just started using my older Pentium 120 laptop again, but I was finding Squeak a quite slow compared to the Pentium II 300. When my battery was low I checked the power settings. It turns out it was set to run in power saving mode at a very slow processor speed. I changed it to run at full speed, and it feels like a real speed daemon! Amazing! This software is one of the few that makes older and older hardware ever more viable. Thanks to the VM and the Morphic teams for their great work! Mike

Morphic is nice in that you can drag things around and embed them in each other. Using this facility plus inspectors, you can create an arbitrary window this way. It pretty much has the feel of a GUI builder, except there is no way to generate code to recreate the thing. You do have the option of sticking the morph in a variable somewhere and deepCopy'ing it to create new instances. Perhaps this is even the wave of the future, but it's not commonly done right now. I noted that his reworking of the "appearances" menu does not include all the elements of the 2.8a menu (particularly the system fonts), but otherwise it appears to run nicely.

"Clicking with the roller" means pressing the third mouse button (blue button in Smalltalk terms). This brings up a menu. The very first time you do this it displays the patch from under the menu at the screen origin - which clearly is a bug. It was reported so many times I thought it was fixed by now ... -Bert-
