2.4b FileDirectory>>fileExists:

A recent change to FileDirectory>>fileExists: makes the test for a given file case-sensitive. I noticed this when 2.4b couldn't find the sources file even though I had copied one from a working 2.4beta directory. Changing the name to exactly 'SqueakV2.sources' solved that. Since most (all for Squeak?) operating systems are not case-sensitive, it might be nice to retain the old behavior. Code to do so follows. I've also experienced difficulties trying to update the original released 2.4 image. Has anyone packaged up a 2.4b .zip file for us PC users? Or... someone please list which files I'll need and where to get them. Dan Ingalls wrote of changes from 2.4a to 2.4b on 4/23, but I cannot find files bearing this date at the posted ftp site. TextOnCurve seems to have had a method (#composeAll) removed which leads to code (which isn't quite ready for curved text) in the superclass (NewParagraph) being used instead. Cheers, Bob

If you simply want to use a single .sources file and VM with multiple ..image and .changes file sets, my normal way of doing this is to put all the files into the same directory and do a save as... from Squeak and name the new image whatever different name I like - which also generates a correspondingly named .changes file. Simply set up a new shortcut to explicitly launch the new image and you should be in business. Create as many as you like. update 617 syntax error

In updating 2.4 I get a syntax error for update 617. Has anyone else gotten this? Also, I am starting with the 2.4 (Mac) image. Yet, the latest updates appear to have numbers like 1165, 1166, ....Should I be starting with a different image (e.g. 2.4a)? --dick peskin ================================= R. L. I have implemented callbacks for SqueakAPI calls under Squeak1.3x but calling the interpret does not work anytime. And the Jitter version does not work with the interpret loop. I can't replicate the problem so far. Please note that you will not be able to open the same image multiple times without getting the warning about a 'missing' changes file. This is because Squeak keeps the changes file open for write during the entire session and this prevents another session to open the very same changes file. In general, I always have VM/Sources separate from (multiple) image/changes and I never had any problems with it. I have some questions that may help me to clarify what's going on: What does the title bar of the main window say? Does it display the actual image name correctly? After starting, if you click away the warning and open up a file browser, what directory are you in? Is it the same as the image directory (which should be the case) and can you see the changes file from there?! Given that this is the case, when you're clicking on it, do you see the first n lines?! What does the short cut look like?! Do you refer only to the image (assuming that you have associated the *right* VM with '.image') or do you explicitly specify the VM to use?! Yup. S-A is time based, so as soon as you enter a project with a Wonderland it starts incrementing its clock. And until I work my way around to putting in the hooks to notify the renderer whether or not anything has changed in the visual field it assumes it needs to render every frame. For the curious, you can execute/print: scheduler getFPS to find out what frame rate you're currently getting. You can also execute/print: scheduler getTime to find out the current time in a Wonderland. For the truly curious, you can also set Alarms in Wonderlands. There are two ways of doing this: 1) Alarm do: [ bunny turn: left ] at: 1000. (The bunny will turn left 1000 seconds after you created the Wonderland) 2) Alarm do: [ bunny roll: left ] in: 10. (The bunny will roll left 10 seconds after you execute this line) If for some reason you can't live with Squeak-Alice using as much of your CPU has it can get, look at WonderlandCameraMorph->stepping->stepTime and change the value to something larger than 1. However, this will put a ceiling on your frame rate, and the surgeon general has determined that working with interactive 3D graphics at a frame rate below 10 fps is incredibly aggravating and prone to shorten your life out of sheer frustration. Besides, your CPU has been needing a good workout, hasn't it? =) Jeff

Before change I've used emulate app icon option in window maker. This prevent me from using sound in squeak and I do not know why.
