debugger

Hello, I'm a squeak/Smalltalk novice but I've spent a number of years with various other environments: Interlisp-D, LispWorks, etc. Unfortunately, I have to admit to being extremely puzzled by the squeak debugger! After inserting a "self halt" into a method and getting into the debugger, I'm not sure what "step" and "send" are supposed to do. When I repeatedly click on "step", nothing happens visually for a while and then finally the current position leaps forward. It's as if I'm stepping through an inner method that isn't being displayed then, when it finishes, I leap ahead to some later point in the current method. "send" is also mysterious though it _seems_ to be more like what I expect "step" to do. It appears to descend into another method. I don't have the Smalltalk-80 book that describes the interactive programming environment. Can anyone clue me in as to what's going on? Thanks very much, Jerry Jackson

atRandom...

I love the way Squeak uses the random number generator in the collection class. This hugely simplifies a lot of things. I have run into some portability issues with this, however. Squeak uses truncation for 'asInteger', Dolphin uses rounding. This can make a big difference. Does anyone know what the ANSI standard for 'asInteger' should be? Regardless of this, I think it may be less ambiguous to use 'truncated' rather than asInteger. index := (aGenerator next * self size) asInteger + 1. index := (aGenerator next * self size) truncated + 1. The other thing I noticed is that atRandom and atRandom: aRNG duplicate a lot of code. Why not implement atRandom as this: atRandom ^self atRandom: RandomForPicking Peter....

Re: the ActiveX Squeak OCX Is there any work being done to make a plugin to work with 'other' systems? Us non-windows-using non-internet-explorer-running Squeakers would love to join in the fun too! It's too bad some common standard for plug-ins never emerged from the browser wars.

Hi gang, Well I just took a look at the link below and I must say it's very impressive. However, it does bring up the possibility of nasty squeak viruses infecting your machine. Some thought should be given regarding a security mechanism to limit or prevent such things if Squeak/web applets are to be produced. Also, sorry for the long lapse in updates. Unfortunately, I've been busy with my real job and haven't had any real time to Squeak. Therefore, I'm going to upload my BeOS Squeak project somewhere (assuming I can find a site for it) and release it to anyone who wants to take it on. Hopefully, someone can get it done faster than I can (I'm going thru a Squeak and BeOS learning curve...twice the work) and I'm not sure when work will give me a breather to be able to finish this. They hold named objects (named via the hash keys) that you might want to have free access to in some set of classes, but not have the namespace polluted where they aren't needed. An example is the set of Character constants stored in the global Dictionary (i.e. it's stored in Smalltalk) TextConstants. In here for example is an entry named 'Space' having a value of the space character (ASCII 32). If you use TextConstants as a PoolDictionary in a class then you have access to elements of that Dictionary as if they were class variables (i.e. you just have to reference 'Space' if you want the space character. For an example in Squeak, look at the class CharacterBlockScanner in category Graphics-Support. It uses TextConstants as a pool dictionary. If you look in the 'cr' method in the 'stop conditions' protocol you can see reference to 'CR' which is an entry in TextConstants: characterPoint _ ((text at: lastIndex) = CR ifTrue: [leftMargin] ifFalse: [nextLeftMargin]) I hope this helps.
