A Variety of Squeak-ish Questions

I've been saving up a list of general Squeak questions, and when adding one today, I decided to ask them all at once: - What's the easiest way of moving a method from one protocol to another, or a class from one category to another? For the former, I've been cutting-pasting code, but I can't figure out how to do the latter. - I have some ordered collections that contain BlockContexts (e.g., the backup jobs list in PWS). When I inspect the collection, I just see "Undefined DoIt". If I inspect deeper, I can get to the bytecodes, but that's just a bit too far for me. Is there anyway to see what the original BlockContext looked like? - I'm confused about ChangeSets vs. Projects vs. Change files. Ted K. recently suggested that I look at the Change Sorter, which is a majorly cool gadget. But I suddenly discovered that, in my 1.23 image, I had the new things from 1.21 and 1.22 in different change sets. But I had no projects with those names, and I thought that ChangeSets and Projects were related. And then I started wondering how these all resided in the same Changes file -- they must, mustn't they? Is there a paper or something that explains all of this? - What is the maximum size of a DoIt? I exceeded it today. I was adding students to our PWS-based turnin/grading browser, three lines per student and 120 students. When I tried to select and execute the whole block of code, I got an error about "classEncoding not understood" which I didn't understand. I then tried executing the code in three chunks -- and that worked fine. I think I blew up some limit. Where is that limit? Is it something I can change? Thanks! Squeak 1.3 on HP-UX

Hi, I just got the non-jit 1.3 Interpreter running on HP-UX (10.20). If someone is interested I can put the binary on a ftp server. I also tried to get the JITTER running but soon discovered that I need more PA-RISC knowledge to get that done. As I understand I need a goto statement with a variable argument. Since I do not use gcc I will probably need some assembler code :-( Has anyone tried to port the JITTER to HP-UX yet ? RE: API Calls, ExternalStructures and now... Callbacks!

There are some situations when the VM reacts with spureous #doesNotUnderstand: messages when an unspected callback is activated. I am working on it. ( Provably we must have a process to handle callbacks. Windoze 3D borders and title bar

Squeakers, Starting with Andreas Raab's NiceSystemView posted a few days ago, I have enhanced the look and feel to be much more Windoze like. The code below also does a couple of things worth mentioning: 1) ProjectViews are now immune from these changes so they will still work for now 2) I have guarded the internal subview border resizing with a leftshift hack to prevent over-aggressive offerings of resizing help when all you really wanted was to click the instance button or select the last item visible in a list. The feature is still there, simply hold down the shift key and mouse over the border to resize. This code will file into a virgin 1.3 image and install itself as the default window look. Add the scroll bar code posted earlier and we are starting to get close. I will post both this and the latest version of the scrollbar code on UIUC today so it will be permanently accessible. When I did the initial port of Squeak to SunOS I suspected one problem of being caused by malloc returning a "negative" address (it turned out to be something entirely different). I had similar worries about the DEC Alpha port, where Squeak "only just" manages to scrape by as a 32-bit application living ("squatting"? ;) in a 64-bit universe -- but using the relevant flags to the linker seems to ensure the correct behaviour. Andreas suggests ensuring that the compiler treats ints as unsigned. If you can do this then it'll work (gcc, for example, has -funsigned-char but I don't think it has -funsigned-int). However, there are literally hundreds of places in the interpreter where addresses are implicitly assumed to be non-negative 32-bit signed values, and I'd be terrified of trying to convince myself that the interpreter were 100% correct with any smple "workaround". Even #defining int to be unsigned int would leave me scared, since there's no way to know what secondary effects this might have on stuff imported from header files (even if the #define was always done after the last header file were included -- since #defines are felt inside other #defines at expansion time, not definition time). My suggestion would be to avoid malloc entirely and to allocate an area of memory by some other means, in a way that leaves you certain that it can only ever be in the lower half of the address space. One possibility would be to mmap() the object memory from /dev/zero, at an address that you know to be safe -- you would be able to treat the memory so allocated pretty much like that allocated by malloc(). Another possibility might be to investigate if the BeOS linker has flags to control where the uninitialised data segment is mapped for an application: if you can set this manually, then you should be able to choose a suitable "safe" address. If you run into real problems with this then let me know. I have BeOS installed on my Mac, so I could try to come up with a suitable workaround for you. 32 bit left rotates where n > 1: a hack

Disclaimer: this is the stuff of geek teen idols and video games; it would draw a barely stiffled yawn from even a com- puter science novice, so if you're expecting deep thoughts, read no further. That being said, this hack might prove useful to someone, so here goes: Many current cryptographic methods such as SQUARE, Blowfish, RIPEMD-160, and HAVAL use word rotation as one of the central operations. The most obvious expression: (a bitShift: n) bitOr: (a BitShift: -n) for some fixed n is quite slow. In an early attempt to speed up SQUARE, I wrote three methods to handle the rotations which happened to be on eight bit boundaries. These methods broke the word into four bytes with digitAt: and used digitAt:put: into a four byte Integer to assemble the properly rotated value. Since each rotate was used only once per pass, I did not copy the Integer before munging. I found in trying to hack together a quick version of RIPEMD- 160 that one can actually reduce the execution by about at least a quarter and rotate by an arbitrary amount by adding to the expression given first a bitAnd: so that the left shift stays within four bytes. Hence, my best effort looks like: ((a bitAnd: m) bitShift: n) bitOr: (a BitShift: -n) where n is a number greater than zero, and m is 2^(32 - n) - 1. It seems cheapest when (a bitAnd: m) is a SmallInteger. I welcome any improvements to this technique. At this time, I'm seeking the cheapest non-VM hack for addition of from two to four 32 bit Integers. Even with my shift hack, hash code seems painfully slow. I'd like to get a RIPEMD-160 compress to around 16ms per block on a 133MHz Pentium. For several releases now, we have been improving the support for transparent color. Recently we added ColorForm -- a generalization of Form that includes a color map. This made it possible to do a number of things more cleanly than before, including all the jobs that had been done using MaskedForm. For this reason we removed MaskedForm from the system. It still exists in the sources file because we have not condensed that file recently. One approach for understanding how to supplant uses of MaskedForm with ColorForm would be to find all uses of MaskedForm in an old Squeak, and see how they are implemented in 1.3. The basic idea in recent Squeaks is that BitBlt's "paint" mode stores all source pixels that are non-zero, but leaves the destination unchanged if the source is zero. So for black, white and transparent, you use a 2-bit deep ColorForm with a color array that includes black, white and transparent (and some other dont-care). This generalizes to other color depths. The end result of the new scheme is that it usually doesn't require a second bitmap nor multiple calls on bitblt so it is simpler smaller and faster. This is different from what the value would be if a real interval (1 to: 10) was the receiver of do:, but shouldn't cause any problems, because you shouldn't rely upon the value of the block temp outside of the block itself. (actually, looking at this the inlining could be cleaned up to put the test at the end of the loop and dynamically remove one of the jumps). You would see the strange "temp value swaps" if you change the method by adding or removing a temp variable while debugging the method (or a call chain that contains the method); might this be what is happening? -- tim
