[ANN] Squeak by Example Edition 6.0 released

Specifying method names in Squeak 6.0

I'm following the instructions in Squeak By Example (SBE), edition 5.3. On page 32 it gives code for SBECell initialize. When I type the exact code (excerpted below) It turns everything after the »red. When I accept it, I get "Nothing more expected". If I delete the "» initialize", it gets syntax colored and looks valid, but the method name is no longer initialize. Is this a change from Squeak 5.3 to 6.0. Should I download Squeak 5.3 in order to use the SBE book? SBECell»initialize super initialize. self label: ''; borderWidth: 2; bounds: (0 @ 0 corner: 16 @ 16); offColor: Color cantaloupe; onColor: Color aqua; useSquareCorners. self turnOff.

blobMorph not in A-C in morphs

Hello, Master Squeakers! I recently started the Squeak by Example book, but I have run into a problem: I cannot find the blobMorph. Does it still exist? Or was it removed in some update? Thanks, Quentin

There are instructions on the "Downloads" page: https://squeak.org/downloads/ There is more documentation in "Squeak by Example": https://squeak.org/documentation/ https://github.com/hpi-swa-lab/SqueakByExample-english/releases/download/5.… As a Windows user, just download Squeak into any folder (or just the Desktop) and then double-click the Squeak.exe. No need to get the "all-in-one" if you already know your operating system: http://files.squeak.org/6.0/Squeak6.0-22104-64bit/Squeak6.0-22104-64bit-202… There is a start-up wizard to get you set up. Etoys is still (kind of) working in Squeak 6.0. There are examples in the "Objects Bin", which you get with a left click on the background and then "objects (o)". Or try "new morph... > from alphabetical list". Don't be sad if something does not work but yells at you with a debugger window. Just close that window and try something else in the system. Plenty of stuff to explore. If you want to try out code, take a look at "Help > Terse Guide" from the docking bar at the top. And also open a "Workspace" via "Tools > Workspace". Type something, select it, and hit "Alt+D" or "Ctrl+D" on Windows/Linux: Morph new openInHand. self inform: 3+4. Tetris new openInWorld. There are right-click (or context/pop-up) menus all over the place. Almost any text field can evaluate code. If you have trouble with keyboard focus, click that morph again or try moving the mouse cursor out of it and into it again. Try clicking on visual stuff with the middle mouse button (typically the mouse wheel). A "Morphic Halo" will appear, allowing for direct exploration ... or rotation if you will ;-) Feel free to ask more questions as they arise. I would suggest my approach, especially without heavy gaming requirements. Find your local pawn shop that does computers (out of a handful of local pawn shops, 1 in particular will specialize in computers and 1 in particular will specialize in musical instruments) and go get a low-end laptop (& a trombone!) $200? I tend to wipe the disk and install Ubuntu, but I’m a long-time Linux lunatic. Windows does just fine. Installing Magma database

Hi people, I'm relatively new to the Squeak world. I would like to know how to install Magma on my Squeak 6.0. I tried via SqueakMap (as documented in the swiki) but it doesn't work. I recently found on github https://github.com/magma-database/magma. How could I install Magma on my Squeak from this github repository? greetings Hesaw

Hi all -- We successfully migrated our mailing lists from mailman2 and pipermail to mailman3 and HyperKitty: - https://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman3/lists/ - https://lists.squeakfoundation.org/archives/ Your subscriptions were transferred to the new system so that mail delivery continued to function as expected. To manage mail delivery and other preferences, you can now create an actual account using your mail address. Please do so at your earliest convenience: - https://lists.squeakfoundation.org/accounts/signup/?next=/mailman3/lists/ You might want to use a different password as mailman2 stored those in plaintext, which enabled the system to remind you of your current password as a "feature" ... ;-) This is not possible anymore.
