Hi all. I am starting the task of parsing Wikimedia interlanguage links per : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext#Redirects stuff like: [[fr:Plancton]] [[de:Plankton]] [[ru:Планктон]] [[simple:Plankton]] when I paste this into a Workspace, I get: [[es:Plancton]] [[fr:Plancton]] [[de:Plankton]] [[ru:????????]] [[simple:Plankton]] What should I do? thanks in advance. tty

Squeak By Example image file

Does the original Squeak By Example image file still exist anywhere? I swear I found it once and can't again. It may have been named SBE.image or something similar. For some reason, I thought this was intended to be used with v4 of Squeak, but according to the book it is for v3.9. Robert Kuropkat

Compressing large arrays

Hi, today I learned that I can use #byte64Encoded to compress ByteArrays (and #mimeDecodeToBytes: to uncompress it again). However, I wonder whether there is an option to do the same for arrays that elements' are not limited to bytes. Concretely, I have got an array of integers in range (-20601 to: 20935), so I can map it to 6 or 8 bytes per value. Does Squeak support any way to compress such an array to a stream? Best, Christoph

Smalltalk benchmarks for Composite systems?

Hi all, Two years ago, I started a project for a Parser library - unfortunately, at this time, I was not aware of the marvels of Squeak, so I wrote it in C#. Now I've resumed that project and feel the classical, un-live development process more cumbersome than ever. I would love to migrate my project to Smalltalk, but I'm worrying how much slower it will be compared to C#, as I am doing some quite CPU-intensive computations (that take even C# several seconds for small instances). So I'm searching for some meaningful benchmarks to get an idea of the speed losses to expect. The main computations affect composite traversal, deep copying, etc., so I think the workload should mainly address message-sending. I did not found really good benchmarks searching for "(squeak | smalltalk) vs (c# | java) benchmark" (assuming that C# and Java play in about the same league). Can someone give me a few pointers? In short, under what circumstances would you recommend me to port a computation-intensive library to Smalltalk? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Christoph

UTF8 for Squeak5.2 on Linux ?

Hi All. Squeak5.2 64 bit latest update: #18232 Tobias Pape is able to display Cyrillic on his Squeak. Based on his Font choice, I assume he is running on a dos box as the name of the font strongly suggests microsoft. I am on Linux64 When I navigate... Extras -> Language -> Russian cyrillic displays as ?????? i.e. is not rendered correctly. When I go searching ... Apps ->Font Importer -> Nothing with UTF8 among the selections. Morphic is slow

Hi all, I'm sure this is a FAQ, but I still don't know the perfect answer on it. I often have opened more than 100 windows in a project (no problem to keep an overview using WindowAcrobatics), and it can be really slow to operate the image when I move my cursor over the world - often only 1 FPS. I attached a MessageTally report because I hope it reveals some anomalies that could be specific to my image. I see that my CTStatusMonitorMorph* costs some percents, but even if I disable it, my FPS are often <= 10. Do you have any tips for me? Best, Christoph

Start the Squeak VM without processing the startup list?

Hi, I made the fault to put a #halt into one existing #startUp method and then saved & closed my image ... Now I cannot open it again, as it says: [cid:cf081d58-1ed6-4db1-af4c-c1bfca2e4c6a] I suppose during the startup process, some Graphics component are not yet loaded? How can I rescue my image? Is there any way to skip processing the startup list? Or are there command line options I can use to ignore the Halt signal? Thanks in advance, Christoph

How to avoid "too many bounces" disabling my account

To whom it may concern. Sometimes when I email the list, I get an email saying my account has been disabled due to too many bounces. How do I prevent the bounces from occurring? thank you for your time.
