Teaching Smalltalk

Dear Friends, I'm looking for some help from the Smalltalk community. I hope this is the right place to ask for information. I'm putting together a website aimed at high school students and teachers, and would like to make sure the following page is as good as possible: http://programming.dojo.net.nz/languages/smalltalk/index In particular, "Why would I learn this language?" section needs to have a few paragraphs. I don't use Smalltalk so I hoped that you could provide the main reasons why Smalltalk is a language someone would want to learn about. It would also be great if someone could rewrite the Smalltalk source code example so that it is as close as possible to the C implementation: http://programming.dojo.net.nz/languages/c/index I understand that Smalltalk is very different from C, and uses different paradigms, so it doesn't have to be identical, however it would be great if it worked in generally the same way. It would be great if you could include comments explaining how it works and what is happening (like the C example). Bert, thank you for responding. I am using Windows XP SP3. I downloaded the 4.1 release, Windows installer. I don't know what VM I am using or how to look for it. The .exe file is Squeak4.0.2.exe. Hello, I am an utter beginner at Squeak and just had an extremely frustrating experience with 4.1. I have been going through the first few pages of "Squeak by Example". When I got to the "shout" method, I was unable to get any farther, because I cannot type an up arrow in 4.1. By up arrow I mean '?'. It works fine in 3.9 by typing a '^'. What gives? Thanks in advance.

I was able to type an up arrow (?) once I installed different fonts. Those fonts, however, are ugly compared to the anti-aliased fonts that came with 4.1. Any way to retain both the anti-aliased fonts and keyboard functionality? Regards, W

Programmatically simulating drag and drop

Does anyone know how to simulate drag and drop? I managed to pick up a morph via HandMorph attachMorph:, but I can't get the cursor to move (tried position: and a few others). Thanks. Sean DeNigris

Comparing two forms

How do you compare two forms to see if they are the same image? I did: form1 bits should equal: form2 bits. Is there a better way? Thanks. Hi Lawson, For your original quest an annotating workspace I am wondering about the following story. Two morphs side by side. One a workspace. The other a drawing space. The background for the workspace is the image of the drawing space. The background for the drawing space is the text of the workspace. So you can type and draw directly on the workspace. You can annotate directly on the drawing space. Except for what overlaps what, the two spaces would look the same. That should do your trick without buttons even. I think this might be easier to hack than anything else I've though of along those lines. Now to see is squeak will let me program something close to the story. Comments? How to draw a single pixel with permanence?

I'm trying to go back to beginnings with my own ManelBrot morph because I can quite grok how the one I have works. Mostly because I still dont grok morphs. Example: I'm trying to plot points on a morph using the drawOn message below: drawOn: aCanvas "Draws the receiver on the given canvas" super drawOn: aCanvas. aCanvas form colorAt: 30@30 put: Color black. BUT, with or without the evocation of super drawOn, I can't get the point to stay around. It only draws during a drag. What is the pattern for this. I've looked at much code and many tutorials but they all seem to gloss over this little detail, or at least my eye skips it every time I look at all the examples I can find. Lawson
